My surgery.
Which was supposed to be TOMORROW.
It's going to have to be rescheduled.
All my prepwork, both physical and emotional, is left hanging and feeling wasted.
Auuuuuugh. :(

I will try to distract myself with working more on Sex Kitten, I guess.
I'd put it on hold because I needed to do a bunch of cleaning before my hand was out of commission.
But now I'm (temporarily) freed from that, again.

More news updates when I have them.

Afghan Accountability

There are 18 completed squares, which puts me at more than 40% done with the knitting. I also gave up and bought the pastel foam puzzle-piece play mat for a less-fragile blocking situation. Once I get enough squares for a halfghan done, I will lay them all out and take a picture so that you can see how it's going.

Sunday, it was hot

Mar. 23rd, 2026 08:27 am
We do not normally see 80F (26.67 in C) in March. That's not typical March weather. Today, today is typical March weather: overcast, somewhat damp, 51F (11C). That's March. But on Sunday, mid-June came for a brief visit.

It was a really lovely day despite being way warmer than it had any right to be )

Given the problems with women changing names after marriage, I have a proposal:

Only get married to people you already share a last name with.

This means some people with rarer last names may have to resort to incest, but don't worry:
It'll make for some HILARIOUS Hallmark movies in a generation or two.

Saturday did not go quite as planned.

The plan was to go to Mom's and do the met livestream for Tristan and Isolde (Wagner opera). The tickets were $24.00 each. We got there and sat down and waited for the opera to start.

This was going to be a review of the Met's production of Tristan and Isolde )

The passive voice was studied by us

Mar. 21st, 2026 09:24 pm
I was a polite student and didn't derail class discussion about grammar to say this, so dear readers, you get it instead. A while ago in Spanish class we were talking about ways of expressing accidental or uninentional actions, and how Spanish uses a specific passive voice type of form for this, unlike English where you have to be much more direct about who did the accidental action.

The closest English equivalent I can think of for the Spanish phrases that we were learning is "The computer broke on me." The Spanish phrase has the object that got damaged doing a reflexive action to itself, and the person (who perhaps dropped it, or pressed the wrong button, or in some other way did break it, just not on purpose) appears as an indirect object of the verb. Us English speakers in class agreed that English does indeed do this very differently, since 99% of the time we would just say "I broke it," and that passive voice is very rare in English.

What I did not say in class is that there's one major exception to this rule, that's actually very common if you know where to look. If you want to see the passive voice in English used to downplay someone's responsibility for some negative action, you need look no further than headlines about police officers.

Random Wynnverse thoughts

Mar. 21st, 2026 12:13 pm
Copied from Discord:

--- --- ---

Finding myself thinking about mage Wynn and her teacher
She only has the power at first to grant so many people immortality, and it grows slowly
But he was one of the people she talked to while studying
And I'm sure she could teach him what she knows about soul magic, if she trusts him with it -- and I think she might
So he might take those teachings and add his own twist on it, and grant himself immortality from his own power
Hers is a living rebirth immortality. She recreates herself when she dies. At first through careful hard work and the aid of Alphys, and then eventually to being reborn from a drop of her own blood, to being able to just summon a new body for herself from pure magic

But he possibly creates himself a repairable artificial body
Or maybe turns himself into a genus locii and becomes his own orphanage/school and is the patron spirit of his own lands
He finds his own way to stay undying
Maybe he turns his school into one of those "wandering house" type places. Where it moves through the multiverse and shows up in varying places when he wants to interface with a world
The magic school that shows up when it feels like it, where it feels like it, and takes in desperate children, or those willing to pay the price to learn magic

Probably would tweak a few bits (interlude as sung, not spoken), but really. Look at this, just look at it:

You can't live without the fire
It's the heat that makes you strong
'Cause you're born to live
And fight it all the way
You can't hide what lies inside you
It's the only thing you know
You're embracing that, never walk away
Don't walk away, don't walk away
Don't walk away, don't walk away

Oatmeal

Mar. 20th, 2026 08:15 pm
I like oatmeal. I particularly like the steel cut oat groats oatmeal that involves more time than even traditional rolled oats. But, I also like brown sugar and cinnamon, though not the amounts found in brown-sugar-and-cinnamon instant oatmeal packets.

Today I had a revelation. I do not have to buy flavored oatmeal in horrible instant oatmeal packets that are overprocessed and way too sweet.

I can totally make the oatmeal I like and add brown sugar and cinnamon (or other flavorings) to suit me. It is okay to make delicious flavored oatmeal out of whatever oatmeal and whatever flavorings I might like.

This completely obvious and uncomplicated notion was revelatory to me today, so perhaps other people need to hear it too.
One big problem I have with the internet and time management is I will think of a question like "what is the average lifespan of a koala" and then I will look that up and then I will see something on the page with the answer that will prompt another question like "when did koalas evolve" and then it just becomes an infinite koala climb of questions and answers that prompt more questions.

And then I contemplate getting a PhD in koala, but it won't pay the bills.
Photos on Tumblr here.
I don't see that I posted about it here, but I did also make a mini fruit slice.

Minimal afghan accountability

Mar. 20th, 2026 04:49 pm
There are 16 squares. 7 brown, 3 mostly-brown, 6 mostly-white. All of the completed squares except for one of the brown squares have been blocked and have ends woven in. I am 38% done with the knitting of squares. I have enough mostly-white yarn for one more square (probably). Y'know, I could use my scale to WEIGH THE YARN and see if there's probably enough. I could compare to an existing mostly-white square. Let me go do that.

There are 46 grams of yarn and 48 grams of square. So, maybe not enough yarn but it'll be close. To avoid rage-quitting due to being short of yarn, I'm going to have to make more mostly-white yarn before proceeding on that front. And that means it's time for some mostly-brown squares with the new, excitingly squishy yarn that has sufficient twist in the plying. Yay!

Wasn't there a scarf?

I do not want to talk about the scarf. It's not scarf season anyway and won't be for a while.

Mixed Media

My partner was out for a walk given the unusually warm weather we've been having. He texted me excitedly that he thought the swan might be back. (Some of you may remember we got a weeklong visit from one last year).

Then as he came closer he realized the swan seemed unmoving and stiff...

Thursday Recs

Mar. 19th, 2026 07:52 pm
Hello, all! It's time once again for Thursday Recs!

With Tumblr's recent foibles in mind, this week I'm going to rec [community profile] newcomers; if you're new to Dreamwidth, or even if you've been here a while, there are lots of friendly people there who are willing to help answer questions and figure things out with you. I personally have posted a lot of (rather Tumblr-centric) tutorials about Dreamwidth there. If you know someone who's interested in learning more about Dreamwidth, it's a good place to point them!

Do you have a rec for this week? Just reply to this post with something queer or queer-adjacent (such as, soap made by a queer person that isn't necessarily queer themed) that you'd, well, recommend. Self-recs are welcome, as are recs for fandom-related content!

Or have you tried something that's been recced here? Do you have your own report to share about it? I'd love to hear about it!

Thank you for sympathies

Mar. 19th, 2026 06:44 pm
Not have the spoons to say it individually, but thank you.

Orchard Bees

Mar. 19th, 2026 04:02 pm
This morning I went to check out the big insect hotel near the canal and I was just in time to catch a whole bunch of male European orchard bees who I am fairly sure had just hatched (the females will hatch a little later in the year).

Pothos Pole Project Progress

Mar. 18th, 2026 10:22 pm
In the pothos project, where I discovered that the houseplant pothos can get a lot bigger than it normally is if you give it something to climb, I selected a (free) pothos a tenant had left behind, built it a moss pole, and pinned it to the moss pole to see if I could get it to climb that moss pole.

And how is that going? )

Explaining Shape Note Music

Mar. 18th, 2026 07:40 pm
A translation/expansion of what I wrote for my open-topic presentation for my Spanish class.
Basically what is shape note music?
- A genre of folk music from the United States.
- Not very widely-known even in the US.
- Grew out of Protestant Christian music with influence from other genres of folk music.
- Began in the 1700s, but unlike some music and other traditions from that era, it is not a re-creation from historical evidence but instead a "living" tradition- people have been singing and writing shape note music from the 18th century to the present day.

How is it different from other types of folk music?
- Sung by groups of singers with no instrumental accompaniment.
- Tends to make all voice parts equally complex, rather than viewing them as melody + backup singers (not all the time, but like, moreso than some genres of music.)
- Emphasis on written music (although there are still some unwritten rules, and some ways people apply their own interpretations to the songs.)
- A social activity, not a religious service and not a performance- the expectation is that if you go to a shape note event, you're there to sing, not to listen.

Why is it like that?
- It started with a movement to improve music in churches, which meant teaching churchgoers to sing and to read music.
- Consider the context: Before radio and recorded music, the only way to learn a new song was to hear it in person, or to read it in a book. The United States in the mid-1700s was not particularly well-endowed with infrastructure or education systems, and many people lived in relatively isolated rural areas, so both seeing musicians in person and finding a music teacher could be difficult.
- The solution that arose to meet this need: Travelling singing teachers.
- Their sales pitch: Take a short class with this New Improved Method that makes learning to read music easy! Then buy our book Music For Dummies* and continue practicing on your own. In fact, our system is so easy that if you can't get to a class, you can teach yourself just from the book! Buy Yours Today!
- What was this wonderful innovation? Pairing a simple solfege system with standard music notation by using differently shaped note "heads" to represent each solfege syllable. Thus, shape notes.
- There were other similar systems, but this is the one that attained the most popularity.
- These temporary singing schools mainly taught religious music, that people might use in church services in the future, but they were social events organized by professional teachers or groups of singers. The form of the events stayed the same, even as more people learned the music and they stopped serving the same educational function.

(To be continued with: what is shape note singing like today?)

Sex Kitten update

Mar. 17th, 2026 08:40 pm
I have not been quiet because nothing is getting done.
I have been quiet because I'm so distracted right now with lots of things including writing for Sex Kitten.

I have finished the full (rough) outline and have broken up the story into 10 total sections to make it easier to write. This might warble a bit to 11 sections at some point if I adjust where the breaks are? But that doesn't matter a huge deal, as these breaks are NOT chapters, they're just to make processing the story easier for me.

Of the 10 sections, I currently have gotten through the detailed summary of 5 of them, simple summary for 1, and am in the process of converting one from a simple summary to a detailed one. This leaves 3 sections not yet started. Call it, eh... 5.75 out of 10?

I'll still need to do the editing/cleaning up pass after this.
So many little plot details that currently are clunky and need to be smoothed out and worked more properly into the overall narrative.

And of course, the reminder that with my upcoming surgery I'll be severely slowing down for at least 2 weeks, as the soft cast will make it hard to type, and pain will make it hard to focus.
Here's to having my thumb fixed, though.

I want to talk about the plot so far and details I need to work on, so below the cut will be significant plot and character spoilers.

Cut for spoilers )

...okay.
I'm tired so I'm going to call it there.
I'll bring you more news shortly before my surgery day, and then might go radio silent for a bit while I'm recovering.
I'll try to at least make a "I'm home and alive" sorta post after the hospital, but no updates for a bit, even if I'm working.

See y'all later, thanks for reading.
